Music Thursday

In the fourth instalment of this series, I have a diverse range of songs for your (immediate) attention.

First of all, the superb, enigmatic and crazy Bad Brains.

Bad Brains - Right Brigade

It is hard, with Bad Brains, to know where to start. They are one of the most influential bands that you have never heard off. There are rated from artists as diverse as Green Day, Metallica and rapper Lil Jon, amongst many others. Bad Brains where a Rastafarian punk band, that many credit with the creation of the hardcore punk movement (and indeed they are credited as a massive inspiration by acts such as cro-mags and Black Flag). Interestingly, they discovered reggae as a result of the English punk bands that were starting to explore that genre. Bad Brains fused punk, metal, jazz fusion and reggae, as well as other genres, to create a truly unique sound. There magus opus was there debut self titled album released in 1982, which is a work of pure furious energy. The sound the band managed to capture on this recording is sublime, with the passion captured perfectly. From blazing riffs to soaring solos, to chilled out reggae this album is a pleasure to listen to from start to finish. I remember the first time I listened to it, at the humble age of 13, as if it was yesterday and it never grows old.
The song I have chosen is my favourite, mainly because of the unsurpassed solo.

The second song is a vastly underrated trance classic, that was my favourite song off the first album I ever owned.

Universal Nation - Push

This is truly a classic. It builds slowly adding layers gradually until it suddenly lowers again, with a tantalising bridge only to build quickly to a euphoric pace. Awesome

Last but not least, is the bluesy and melancholy soaked alone by weedeater

Weedeater - Alone

Enjoy !
