First off I will start with the song from which the name of this blog came from!
Corrosion of Conformity - Senior Limpio
This is a song off the magnificent, Deliverance, the album which launched COC (Corrosion of Conformity) into the metal/ alternative mainstream. The whole album is brilliant, with swaggering southern riffs that instantly grip you, alongside more melancholy laden tunes. This song falls into the former category.
Second up is one of my favourite tracks from my favourite album of all time.
Down - Stone the Crow
Words fail to describe, how much I love this song, this album and this band! This song comes of the "Nola" album, which for me in musical, lyrical and presentational forms, is the objectification of perfection. Its weary, melancholy soaked and wonderfully crafted lyrics are sung/screamed by Phil Anselmo (of Pantera fame) with such passion and skill. The raw production is excellent, perfectly capturing the guitars growling out those southern/Black Sabbath like riffs; and what riffs they are ! Never had I, or indeed have I (or likely to) hear so many truly sublime riffs in a song, let alone an album. There is something magical about this album that I struggle to described, but that grips me so much. As well as the music, the artwork on this album was transcendent, strewn with the ethereal photography of Clarence John Laughlin. I would strongly recommend this album to anyone! As for the song, it was the lead single of this album and is a stoner rock classic, with a bluesy riff, soulful singing and a soaring guitar solo. The video is also excellent. Enjoy!
And Last, but not least is the underrated Orange Goblin song whiskey leech.
Orange Goblin - Whiskey Leech
This (now) stalwart of the British stoner rock scene have been going for around sixteen years now! Given that many of these bands end up splitting up after a couple of albums due to stagnation, this is somewhat of an achievement. Orange Goblin, have never and probably will never get the recognition they deserve (probably born too late lol), not that I imagine they care! This is a song from their peak, in those dark periods of time when stoner rock and indeed most of metal, was very much maligned.
I first heard of this band when I was I mere 12 years old from a chance listen to the Radio 1 rock show. The song was Scorpionica and it certainly made an impact, especially given that until then I had been feed on a diet of Korn and Soulfly (nothing wrong with those bands, I still love them). This song I first heard due to the very informative free Cd Metal Hammer gave away free, from which I learnt a hell of a lot about metal. I am still very grateful for those Metal Hammer freebies. It is a very bluesy number with excellent (and bizarre lyrics) Enjoy!
