Once again I have missed the allotted day for this post. In
fact blogging has been slow this week.
First up, Type O Negative - Santana Medley
This is an overlooked track by the enigmatic and magnificent
Type O Negative, hidden away on a DVD. It is a cover of the Santana songs Evil
Ways, Oye Como Va and Black Magic Woman. Santana mixes surprisingly well with
the sound of Type O Negative and the result is more than the sum of the parts.
With the crushing and melodic distorted guitar riffs and the gothic bassy
baritone of the late Pete Steele (who sadly died in April 2010) gracing the
track. Type O Negative, were one of the most original and popular metal bands
of the 90's, developing and popularising the Goth metal genre. However, don’t
let that tag put you off, Type O Negative write heavy, yet melodic (indeed
catchy and radio friendly) tunes with darkly hilarious lyrics that can often
make one laugh out loud. They are a band well worth investigating even if you
are not normally a fan of metal. (For a good start try the songs Black No.
1 , Wolf Moon
and My
Girlfriend's Girlfriend ; for those
of you already familiar with Type O Negative try Pete Steele's old band Carnivore ,
a thrasher version of TON)
Second is this Dubstep mix by High Rankin
For something a bit different check out this Dubstep mix, although it is over 40 minutes long it is worth a listen, some good remixes of trance tunes and well as some pure Dubstep.
Last. but not least. is this track from the Oxford stoner rock band Desert Storm.
Desert Storm* have been around for a few years ( since around 2007), and have been rocking the stoner rock scene around the south of England. They have a very strong and infectious "grove" to their sound, a bit like a heavier Clutch. However, they have a distinctive sound and are a good addition to the surprisingly crowed stoner rock genre. If you like Orange Goblin, Clutch or indeed most rock you will probably enjoy this. They are good live as well as this video shows. Well worth checking out.
Enjoy!
* They are a mate’s band; however that doesn’t change anything
I would still recommend them even if they weren’t.
